Cut ceramic tile ceramic tile affords a durable attractive surface for floors and walls alike. While loose tiles are cut using a tile wet saw installed tiles need to be cut with hand tools. Measure the area where the tile will be installed. There are several methods for cutting tiles by hand without a tile cutter using a cutting tool such as a glass cutter or a carbide tipped pencil.

To cut a ceramic tile using a glass cutter start by using a pencil and a square or a ruler shaped like a right angle to measure and mark your tile. Use a straight edge to mark the line with an erasable marker. They are on the expensive side but can be used for a lot of remodelling jobs at home. To make square or box cuts in the tile or to cut out large sections of tile use an angle grinder.

Before using any tool to cut tile measure the glazed side of the tile to determine where you need to make the cut. The most basic method of cutting tiles particularly straight cuts is using a tile scribe. Mark a line across the tile at that distance. Subtract 1 4 inch to allow for a spacer to determine the exact size to cut the tile.

Next place the square right next to the marked line so you can use it as a guide then press down on the tile with the glass cutter and drag it along the line.
